COLONOSCOPY
PREPARING FOR A COLONOSCOPY
A Colonoscopy is the endoscopic examination of the large bowel and the distal part of the small bowel with a flexible tube scope with a camera at the tip; that passes through the anus.

Obtain a referral form from your physician

MEET THE ANESTHESIOLOGIST

Consultation booking

Laboratory and Imaging test completed

Preoperative questionnaire
THE DAY BEFORE YOUR PROCEDURE:
-
Fast 12 hours prior to surgery
-
24 hour clear liquid diet (coconut water (no pulp), gatorade, chicken broth)
-
Colon cleanse
-
Remember to leave all valuables at home (jewelry, money, etc.)
-
Refrain from smoking and use of alcoholic beverages
-
Shower the morning of the procedure

SURGERY TIMELINE:

Patient assessment about 45 minutes after check-in
-
Anesthesia takes about 15 minutes
-
Scope/Examination takes 15-20 minutes
-
Recovery requires 15-30 minutes
-
Upon clearance by the doctor the patient is released

RESULTS TIMELINE:

The specimen is taken to the laboratory by the patient (If necessary)

Postoperative guidelines are given

Follow-up care
